Age spots are flat brown spots on skin that has seen years of sun, most often the face, the backs of the hands, the arms and the shoulders. They are also called sunspots, liver spots or solar lentigines, and they are harmless; they just make skin look older than it is. What causes age spots
Age spots are clusters of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. Years of UV exposure, from the sun or tanning beds, push the skin to make more melanin than it needs, and over time the excess gathers into distinct dark spots. The damage accumulates, which is why the spots arrive in your forties and fifties even though the sun that caused them was decades ago.
Other factors add to it. As skin ages, its ability to repair sun damage weakens. Fair skin is more prone. Frequent skin injury or inflammation can cause melanin to cluster, and hormonal changes during pregnancy or from medication can disrupt melanin production and make existing spots darker.
How to tell an age spot: it is flat, not raised, unlike a mole. It ranges from light brown to black, from freckle-sized to a larger irregular patch, and it sits on skin that gets sun.

Darinka or Zayda examines the spot or spots, confirms they are age spots rather than melasma or another kind of pigmentation, and recommends the treatment that suits your skin tone and the area. You leave knowing how many visits and what they cost. Skin consultations are complimentary.

Treatment
LaseMD Ultra feels like mild warmth or tingling. IPL uses a cooling tip and is comfortable without anesthetic. A peel gives a tingle while it sits on the skin. All three fit into a workday.

Aftercare
Mild redness for a day or two after the laser, none after IPL, some flaking after a peel. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen on the treated area, including the backs of the hands, which most people forget.

Results
Spots lighten over the weeks after each session as the skin sheds the broken-up pigment. Some spots clear in one or two visits; a whole area is usually a short series.

What causes age spots?
