Sun damage is what years of UV exposure leave across the whole face: scattered sunspots, redness and dilated capillaries, rough texture, fine lines and skin that has lost some of its firmness. At Radiance East Bay Aesthetics in Pleasanton, it is treated with IPL photofacial, LaseMD Ultra, Laser Genesis or a chemical peel, sometimes in combination, chosen at a complimentary skin consultation with Darinka Morfin, LE, or Zayda Yeoh, NP. What causes sun damage
UV light does two things to skin. It pushes the skin to make extra melanin as a protective reaction, which settles into sunspots and blotchy tone. And it breaks down collagen, which is why sun-damaged skin also shows premature lines, rough texture and sagging. Unprotected exposure keeps adding to both.
What makes it worse:
- Age. The skin's ability to repair UV damage diminishes, so damage that was invisible at thirty shows at fifty, especially on the face and hands.
- Previous sunburns. Repeated burns weaken the skin's defenses and leave it more prone to discolouration.
- Fair skin and genetics. People with fair skin are more susceptible to sun damage and more likely to develop sunspots.
- Hormones. Pregnancy and birth control can stimulate melanin, and combined with sun the spots get darker.
Unlike freckles, which fade, sunspots persist and darken with more sun. The tan people chase every summer is the same process.

The treatment for redness. A bright, cooled light removes dilated capillaries and brown spots without bruising, and it treats rosacea, sun damage, freckles, spider veins and uneven texture on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, legs and back. No downtime, and no anesthetic needed. It is not used on very dark skin tones or on recently tanned skin.

LaseMD Ultra
The treatment for spots and texture together. A non-ablative fractional laser that breaks up the excess pigment in sun-damaged areas while stimulating collagen, so fine lines soften and texture smooths as the spots fade. Safe for all skin types, 20 to 30 minutes, and mild redness for a day or two.

Laser Genesis
A gentle, heat-based laser for sun damage, redness, fine lines and enlarged pores, with no downtime at all. Results build gradually over a series, and it can be combined with other treatments.

Chemical peels
A peel removes the sun-damaged top layer to lighten spots and reveal fresher skin, with strengths from a light peel with no downtime to a deeper peel for deep wrinkles, sun spots and severe discolouration.

Consultation
Darinka or Zayda examines the whole face, separates what is pigment, what is redness and what is texture, and builds a plan around your skin tone. Some faces need one treatment; some need two in sequence. You leave with the plan and the cost. Skin consultations are complimentary.

Timing
IPL cannot be done on recently tanned skin, so the best time to treat sun damage is when you are not adding to it.

Treatment
IPL and Laser Genesis are comfortable without numbing. LaseMD Ultra registers as mild tingling or warmth. With a peel, expect tingling while it works.

Aftercare
No downtime after IPL or Laser Genesis, a day or two of redness after LaseMD Ultra, some flaking after a peel. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen from now on, because the treatment removes the damage and the sunscreen stops it returning.

Results
Spots and redness lighten over the weeks after each session; texture and fine lines improve as new collagen forms over one to three months. Most plans are a short series, with maintenance visits to hold the result.

Can sun damage on the face be reversed?
Much of what shows can be. Sunspots and redness lighten with IPL or LaseMD Ultra, and the collagen these treatments stimulate improves texture and fine lines over the following months. What treatment cannot do is stop new damage, which is why daily sunscreen is part of every plan.
What is the best treatment for sun damage?
It depends on what the sun left behind. Redness and broken capillaries point to IPL; spots plus rough texture point to LaseMD Ultra; sensitive skin that wants no downtime points to Laser Genesis; a peel suits surface spots and dullness. Darinka or Zayda recommends one, or two in sequence, at a complimentary consultation.
Does IPL treat redness from sun damage?
Yes. IPL photofacial removes dilated capillaries as well as brown spots, and it treats rosacea and spider veins. There is no downtime and no bruising, and the treatment is comfortable without anesthetic.
