Juvederm is an FDA-approved family of hyaluronic acid fillers that smooth wrinkles, plump lips and restore contour to the cheeks, chin and jawline. At Radiance East Bay Aesthetics in Pleasanton, Zayda Yeoh, NP, a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner trained in injectables through Aesthetic Medical Educators Training and IAPAM, places it herself. A session takes 30 to 45 minutes, the result is visible before you leave and lasts 6 to 18 months depending on the formula and the area. Hyaluronic acid is what keeps skin hydrated and full, and your body makes less of it every year. Juvederm is a smooth hyaluronic acid gel placed beneath the skin, where it attracts and binds water, adding volume and hydration the moment it is placed.
The family has several formulations, and that is the point of it. Some are flexible enough to move with expression; others are firm enough to restore structure and lift. Zayda chooses the formula per area, so a lip and a cheek are never treated with the same syringe by default.
Lips are where Juvederm earns its reputation, and where a light hand matters most. The aim is a lip that looks like yours on a good day.

The appointment
Before. A consultation with Zayda. She evaluates your goals, reviews your health history and builds a plan for your features. In the days before treatment, she may ask you to avoid alcohol, aspirin and certain supplements to reduce bruising.
During. After cleansing and prepping the area, Zayda places the Juvederm with fine needles or a cannula. Most patients describe a mild pinch; the formula contains lidocaine, which takes the edge off as she works. A session takes 30 to 45 minutes.
After. Minor swelling, redness or tenderness at the injection sites usually fades within a few days. Most patients go back to work or their plans straight away. Makeup can usually go on after 24 hours.
Results. Immediate. The final look refines as any early swelling settles over one to two weeks. Depending on the area and the formula, results last 6 to 18 months, and regular maintenance keeps the look consistent.
Juvederm pairs with Botox or Jeuveau when a line moves as well as sags.
Candidacy
You are likely a good candidate if you:
Most healthy adults are candidates. Juvederm may not be recommended if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have certain medical conditions, and Zayda goes through that at the consultation. If the volume you want to rebuild is broad and gradual rather than immediate, Sculptra may be the better tool.
Cost
The number of syringes, which follows from how many areas you treat and how much volume each needs, and the formula, since different Juvederm products suit different areas. A lip refresh and a lip-plus-cheek plan are different totals. Zayda gives you the plan and the cost at the consultation, before anything is opened.

Juvederm results last 6 to 18 months, depending on which Juvederm product is used, the area treated and your metabolism. Lips tend to need a refresh sooner than cheeks. Regular maintenance keeps the result consistent.
Most patients get the result they want in a single session. Depending on your goals and the areas treated, Zayda may recommend a follow-up to refine the result or to maintain volume over time.

Hardly any. Most patients go straight back to their day. Minor swelling or bruising can take a few days to settle fully, and makeup can usually go on after 24 hours.
For the first 24 hours after Juvederm, skip strenuous exercise, alcohol and direct sun to limit swelling and bruising. Do not press or massage the treated areas unless Zayda tells you to.
